Henrik Ibsen (20th March, 1828 – 23rd May, 1906) is often referred to as the father of realism and ranked just below Shakespeare as Europe’s greatest ever playwright especially as his plays are performed most frequently throughout the world after Shakespeare’s. He was Norwegian and although set his plays in Norway, he wrote them in Danish and lived most of his professional life in Italy and Germany. His affect on the theatre is still evident today and shapes the distinction of plays being art as opposed to entertainment since he broke down all previous traditions and explored issues, developed characterisation, revealed uncomfortable truths, challenged assumptions and brokedown facades in ourselves as well as society. These factors are clearly demonstrated in The Lady from the Sea, the lady being Ellida, the daughter of a lighthouse keeper who therefore grew up by the open sea and has a deep love for it. She married Dr Wangel who had two daughters by his former wife, Bolette and Hilda and they had a son who died as a baby. Her husband recognises the strains put on the marriage by the infant death and is concerned for Ellida’s mental health but more important to Ellida is the return of her former love who she had promised to wait for. She does decide between the two men and her reasons make for good reading in this symbolic play.

It is true love and commitment that keep a marriage or partnership together. Once these essential ingredients disappear, even for one party, partnership will surely fail or worse, a loveless marriage persists for the long suffering couple. Marriage vows 'till death before parting' means jack squat when love is on the rocks. Ibsen in this play also pushed the idea that decisions made freely will lead to true enduring happiness. I believe Ibsen should have added more by stating decisions made freely and wisely can one then move to the path of long lasting happiness. If the union ends, a new one can then begin. But women as fickle minded as Ellida, whose whims and fancies toss about like the sea, will only crush the hearts of men around her. Nothing is unchanging except for God.Product details

The Lady from the Sea Plays Of Henrik Ibsen eBook Henrik Ibsen Reviews
Very entertaining
The Henrik Ibsen play. The translation isn't perfect, but you get the idea of the play. It's an interesting story with interesting characters. I read this before seeing Jan Vardoen's movie, Heart of Lightness, which is about actors filming this play. I recommend reading the play before seeing the movie.
I like the way Ibsen writes makes me feel cathartic and I think that is the real reward of reading his books
This play was interesting; a bit overdramatic and not Ibsen's best, I think. No real complaints about this e-version or translation, although I am not knowledgeable on the subject.
Very dated, I only read it in preparation for watching the film Heart of Lightness.
3 stars for the product I haven't read the play yet, but it came a little damaged, the corner of the book doesn't look like it was cut correctly, and picture of Isben is very pixelated. Besides that, I shouldn't judge a book by its cover and I'm excited to read it!
good read
